“Harry Potter“ star Daniel Radcliffe and Evan Rachel Wood (”Westworld") in an absurdly wacky biopic parody about the American accordion musician and parodist Alfred ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic. One night, “Weird Al” Yankovic (Daniel Radcliffe) is admitted to a hospital emergency room. The popular parody singer is close to death. Just as the medical staff are about to give up in frustration and call it a day, Al sits up and explains that he has something urgent to do. This is followed by a major flashback to Al's childhood - and the birth of a living legend... “Where parody and biography collide, the film not only unleashes a dynamic that repeatedly allows side steps out of the chronological biopic ox trot. The jokes shoved between the facts also give “The Al Yankovic Story” enormous potential for suspense. Because it is never clear when [director] Appel and Yankovic will change the rules and where exactly the journey will take Daniel Radcliffe as Weird Al through this world that has obviously decided to lie at his feet. [...] Why tell the truth when twisting it is much more fun? A principle to which Appel and Yankovic return again and again when the inevitable and inevitably overdrawn patterns of the biopic emerge. Thus the meteoric rise - accompanied by song interludes played by Daniel Radcliffe and sung by Al Yankovic - is followed by a self-destructive relationship with Madonna (Evan Rachel Wood) and a god complex illustrated at every opportunity by the opulent production design. [...] Daniel Radcliffe and Evan Rachel Wood, like the rest of the cast, are clearly enjoying the farce of a biopic that is “The Al Yankovic Story”. The silliness loses a little momentum over its almost two-hour running time, but not its warmth.
