For fans of masterpieces like TIGER & DRAGON and HERO, both also starring Zhang Zi-Yi, Wong Kar-Wai's poetic martial arts epic THE GRANDMASTER tells the story of Wing Chun master IP Man (Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE), beginning against the backdrop of turbulence in 1930s and 40s China. Unbeaten in a test of strength against other kungfu artists, IP Man, legendary teacher and mentor of Bruce Lee, is celebrated as the grandmaster of the Chinese South. During a competition, he wins the affection of the proud Gong Er (Zhang Zi-Yi), a master of the Northern Chinese martial arts tradition. But the occupation by Japanese troops in southern China separates the two. IP Man has to fight for the survival of his family, while Gong Er seeks retribution in the far north for the cowardly murder of her father. After the war ends, the two meet again in Hong Kong. IP Man founds a kungfu school and Gong Er works as a doctor - but the past has left its mark.
