The history of DEFA was decisively shaped by the people who worked on its numerous films. Far more than 2,000 people were permanently employed in the various studios. In addition to artistic professions such as directing, acting, screenwriting, dramaturgy, camera and editing, DEFA also employed plasterers and carpenters, firemen and nurses.
